Shopify and OpenAI have announced a partnership that brings Instant Checkout directly into ChatGPT.
This isn’t just another sales channel. It marks a significant shift in how people discover and buy products.
Instead of clicking through search results or ads, shoppers can now ask ChatGPT a question, view product options, and purchase all within the same conversation. If your products aren’t available here, you won’t appear where decisions are being made.
Vanessa Lee, VP of Product at Shopify, summed it up clearly:
“Shopping is changing fast. People are discovering products in AI conversations, not just through search or ads. This will let our merchants show up naturally in those moments and give shoppers a way to buy without breaking their flow. It’s a really exciting shift for commerce.”
The Rollout: What’s Live and What’s Coming
- September 2025. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT with a group of U.S. based Etsy sellers.
- Shopify Merchants. Shopify has confirmed support is coming soon, but not yet live for all stores. Some early partners are already being onboarded.
- Future Expansion. Once Shopify flips the switch, merchants will be able to enable Instant Checkout directly in their admin dashboard. Independent sites can prepare now by implementing the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which underpins the whole system.
This means, right now, Shopify merchants can’t enable it just yet, but preparing early will make adoption smooth when general availability arrives.
How to Get Ready for Instant Checkout
Fix your product data
AI relies on clarity. Titles, descriptions, prices, availability, and returns info all need to be accurate and structured. Adding schema markup and ensuring clean product feeds will make it easier for AI to surface your products.
Review and update your content’s intent
Shoppers will buy while still in conversation. For example:
“Show me women’s running trainers under £250 that are blue in a size 5.”
ChatGPT can display relevant results instantly, and the buyer can simply respond: “I’ll buy those.”
The zero-click trend will accelerate. Use natural, conversational language in product descriptions so your products match how people actually ask.
Strengthen brand authority
Brand authority has been a big discussion, and for good reason. AI is more likely to recommend products it trusts. Strong reviews, clear policies, transparent messaging, and a consistent brand identity now directly affect whether and where you appear.
Don’t ignore social signals
It’s not all about on-site optimisation. Mentions, reviews, and conversation volume around your brand will play a role. If people are talking about you positively, AI will take that into account when recommending products.
The buying journey is moving from websites and search engines to AI-driven conversations.
Next Steps for Merchants
To prepare your store now:
- Audit your product data. Check titles, descriptions, and availability. Add structured data where possible.
- Update content for conversational queries. Rewrite key product descriptions in natural language so they match how buyers ask.
- Strengthen your trust signals. Make return policies, shipping details, and reviews easy to find and consistent across platforms.
- Monitor your brand mentions. Track reviews and social conversations; address gaps and encourage positive engagement.
- Stay close to Shopify updates. Keep an eye on the admin panel and Shopify announcements for the Agentic Commerce rollout.
Being ready before the general rollout means you won’t be playing catch-up when this becomes the default buying experience. Brands that act early will have a real advantage.
