We spend a lot of time in SEO talking about AI, structured data, and Core Web Vitals. But here’s the thing: none of those matter if the basics aren’t right. And one of the basics still tripping brands up? Typos.
It sounds small, but spelling and grammar errors can quietly undermine your SEO, conversion rates, and brand reputation. Understand why it matters and how to fix it fast.
Why Typos Hurt More Than You Think
Have you ever landed on a site, spotted a typo in the first five seconds, and instantly lost trust? That reaction is common and costly. Typos affect
- Perception: Users question credibility before they even evaluate your product or service.
- Conversions: Mistakes in CTAs, forms, or product copy reduce confidence and sales.
- SEO: Misspelled internal links, anchor text, or product names can weaken visibility.
In other words, errors aren’t just embarrassing, they directly impact performance.
How to Check for Typos
The good news? This problem is easy to fix. Here’s how to run a full-site spell check using Screaming Frog:
- Open Screaming Frog.
- Go to Configuration > Spelling & Grammar.
- Enable both spell check and grammar check.
- Run your crawl.
If you’ve already crawled your site, turn on spelling and grammar checks and Screaming Frog will prompt you to re-run the URLs.
When the crawl finishes, go to the Content Tab, use the top left drop-down to select Spelling or Grammar, and review all flagged pages. If Screaming Frog keeps flagging your brand or product names as they have unique spellings, add them under Configuration > Spelling & Grammar > Ignore.
Now you have the data, what do you do with it?
Prioritise correcting mistakes in page titles, headings, meta descriptions, and body copy. These are the first things users and search engines see and the easiest places to lose credibility.
A typo check is just one step in a good audit process, but it’s an important one. Brands lose trust not just because of big technical SEO issues but because of small, avoidable mistakes. If visitors spot errors before they even engage with your product, you’ve lost them. Polished content reinforces professionalism, builds authority, and ensures search engines understand your site correctly.
