We’ve all seen the tempting offers: “Leave us a 5-star review on Google and get 10% off your next order!” While these deals might sound appealing, they’re not allowed under Google’s guidelines. And for good reason—offering discounts or incentives for reviews can undermine the authenticity and integrity of feedback, which is essential for building trust with both your customers and potential clients.

In fact, Google’s guidelines are crystal clear: offering rewards in exchange for reviews, whether it’s a discount, freebie, or any kind of incentive, is strictly prohibited. Why? Because honest reviews are the foundation of genuine customer relationships. They help future customers make informed decisions and keep businesses authentic.

Despite this, certain “tactics” often resurface from time to time, and lately, I’ve noticed an increase in businesses offering incentives for reviews. Let’s be clear, this is a strategy you should avoid. But don’t worry there are plenty of legitimate ways to encourage reviews and build strong connections with your customers without breaking any rules.

Ask for Reviews (Politely)
It might seem obvious, but if you don’t ask, you won’t get. Make sure to ask your customers for reviews, but do so in a friendly and non-intrusive way. No one likes feeling pressured, so be kind and respectful when requesting feedback. A thoughtful request is far more likely to yield positive results.

Make It Easy for Customers to Leave Reviews
Simplifying the process can go a long way. Include a direct link to your Google review page in follow-up emails or invoices. The easier you make it, the more likely customers will take a moment to leave their thoughts.

Send a Follow-Up Email
Check in with customers to ask how they’re enjoying the product or service. This is especially effective for businesses like restaurants or service-based industries. A simple follow-up email can prompt a review while also showing that you care about their experience.

Use Social Media
Social media platforms are a great way to engage with customers and ask for reviews. Post reminders and encourage your followers to share their thoughts on their experiences. Including customer testimonials in your social media content can also inspire others to leave reviews.

Physical Prompts
It’s not all about digital. Consider including review reminders on physical items like business cards, flyers, or even stickers with a QR code that leads directly to your Google review page. These tangible prompts can make it easier for customers to leave feedback on the go.

Respond to Reviews
Whether the review is positive or negative, always take the time to respond. Acknowledging customer feedback shows that you value their opinions and are committed to improving. Responding publicly to reviews also demonstrates that you’re engaged and transparent, which builds trust.

    At the end of the day, the goal is to encourage honest, authentic feedback from your customers. Offering incentives for reviews may seem like a quick fix, but it can backfire by attracting fake or biased reviews that ultimately harm your reputation. Instead, focus on building genuine relationships and providing an exceptional experience that will naturally lead to positive reviews.
